new cooling system

in Jan I bought a new computer.  It was one of those "spare no expense" systems that set me back 5 grand.  The case I ended up going with came with a liquid cooling system, and not knowing anything about high end systems or how to keep them cool, I figured this would be a good investment.

well friday the system shut down.  my pump stopped working and the plexiglas top on the water block had cracked.  when I took the radiator, pump, and water block off and drained the system, the light green (color of mountian dew) coolant had turned into thick gelatinous sludge that was dark dark green.

I was pretty lucky not to burn up the fx-60 which has a fairly low heat threshold (63 degrees), thank goodness the mobo shut down when it got too hot.

here's the new setup I'm going with.

pump: pan world 40PX (supposed to be one of the best pumps on the market)

radiator: thermochill pa120.2 (would have gone w/ a 3 fan version, but everyone was sold out of it)

water block: swiftech storm rev. 2

and finaly the reservoir: Danger den round (after I bought everything I saw swiftech had a rectangle one that I probably would have liked better, and it was less expensive... oh well).

I went with 1/2 inch (inner diameter) tygon tubing (no pics of that though), which is supposed to be able to handle pretty much any kind of caustic cooling materials, so, in the event I move from distilled water to something like anti-freeze, I should be ok.

my old system was 1/4 inch tubing and a low flow system, so this new high flow, thick tubing setup should be able to really keep things cool and let me turn up the voltage / speeds at a lot higher settings that I've been able to in the past.

lucky for me my case is huge and will probably be able to fit everything inside.

I'll post pics as soon as I get it shipped in and installed (I'm without a home computer till then too).

Re: new cooling system

To be honest dude, you should much rather get extreme cooling or decent fans. In any case scenario the water and liquid coolers are much riskier concerning quality and it is very dangerous if you want to move your computer (go to a LAN or something).

Re: new cooling system

thats what I thought before I started looking into it.

my case

everything mounts to the inside of the case, and my case is thick walled extruded aluminum and weighs about 50 lbs (22.7kg), so moving it is a task in itself but after everything is installed it can be thrown in the car and taken anywhere you'd want to go (everything is sealed).

with fans I cant keep my cpu below 55 degrees (at the standard 2.6 Ghz).  that old crappy liquid setup would keep it at about 41 overclocked at 3.2 Ghz.  seeing as how melting point on the FX-03 is 63, and stock (or even hard core fan setups) wont take it below 55, thats awfully close to melt down temps, and will wear out the cpu faster.  I'm aiming at keeping it around 32 in idle to help preserve its life span.

The fact that my pump wasn't working, there was no movement of liquid, the water block was cracked and leaking (evaporating) coolant, and it still didn't burn up, speaks for itself.  how long would a normal cpu last w/ a fan setup if that fan burnt up?

I typically buy a new rig every 5 or 6 years.  I want to keep the cpu as cool as it can for as long as it can.  my old system was one of the very first > 1Ghz cpu's amd made and it still outperformed systems being sold on the market today.  thats kind of the same type of setup I want to keep with this one.

Re: new cooling system

I finally got everything installed.  cpu temps are 8°C above ambient temps w/ virtually no air movement through the radiator (I still have to make some vent holes on the top of my case for the radiator).

Re: new cooling system

Looks sweet, now I want a job even more, lol. Btw, is the 2142 tracker available for use? I would like to make a stat checker for it big_smile.

Re: new cooling system

I've been really busy lately and haven't been able to do any work on 2142 stats.  bf2142tracker.com still doesn't have access to public feeds and the guy from GameSpy/IGN has stopped correspondence w/ me, so I'm kind of out of the loop there.  Right before my computer died Craigins said he was going to break out his stats app so others could use it but its been pretty quiet around here so I'm sure he's been busy as well.

Re: new cooling system

been really busy, last weekend was thanksgiving so I didn't get any time to program at all.  Along with that i'm doing some DirectX 3d programming in C# for work and I have been working on that at home after work so i havn't had much time for the stats stuff.
